Role Purpose
To plan, prepare and deliver high quality English language classes to naval personnel, including development of materials, taking account of individual learning styles and ensuring a welcoming, professional learning environment. Any staff without DELTA-level qualifications will be aspiring to deliver at that level and will be working towards that aim, supported by the management team and teaching colleagues. To carry out core administrative tasks to assist the centre in reaching its audience and customer satisfaction targets and in functioning efficiently and smoothly. To engage in continued professional development in order to keep up-to-date with developments in the field and to facilitate consistent provision of high-quality teaching.
Main Accountabilities:
Planning, preparing and delivering high quality English language classes to naval personnel including development of culturally appropriate materials, enhancing the reputation of the British Council as an authority in the field, taking account of individual learning styles and ensuring a welcoming, professional learning environment. Number of timetabled hours per week to be delivered will be agreed based on centre needs and teacher availability.
Incorporating effective use of technology into classes, where possible, to enhance the British Council’s reputation as a cutting-edge provider. British Council Qatar uses the TCMS system for online management of classes and student portals and forums.
Monitoring student progress through appropriate diagnostic testing early on in courses and continuous assessment tasks. Counselling students appropriately at mid and end points of term and encouraging them to take a strategic, autonomous view of learning appropriate to their level.
Teaching in an energetic and engaging way, and in high standard. Teachers in the centre support each other and receive coaching to meet standards in the core areas of:
o Clear aims and lesson staging
o Appropriately varied classroom interaction patterns
o Appropriate pacing o Integrated pronunciation o Error correction and feedback
o Continuity of content
Keeping updated professionally and contributing to the development of the British Council’s reputation as an authority in English Language Teaching.
Completing core administrative tasks accurately and on time. These vary by course & student type, and can include reports, certificates, registers and records of work, student registration records and student progress records, and the performance portfolio.
Representing the organisation in registration sessions, treating it as a point of sale in which they represent the brand. This includes such activities as engaging with customers and their accompanying families as appropriate or working in the front desk area with Customer Service colleagues on registration and counselling duties.
Maintaining a strong overall awareness of the full range of products, services and events at the British Council Qatar such that you can take ownership of enquiries that arise and see them through to closure and encourage students to become involved in other services and activities as appropriate.
Requirements
Passport requirements / Right to work in country
COVID-19 Vaccination: As per Ministry of Public Health guidelines, our teachers are required to be fully vaccinated to teach. Candidates will need to demonstrate this by providing proof of vaccination from the relevant health authority complete with QR code.
Passport: Should be valid for more than 6 months for visa requirements. Gaining residency in Qatar is a complex process and restrictions apply. The main areas to take into consideration are;
1. The Qatari authorities have placed restrictions on certain categories of people. As such, Residence Permits currently cannot be gained by;
a. Nationals from certain countries - the list of affected countries is not publicised and changes without notice.
b. Those aged 60 or above
c. Unmarried partners - only married partners may be sponsored and therefore obtain the appropriate residence permit. It is unlawful in Qatar for unmarried partners to cohabit.
d. Male children above 25 years old and not enrolled in higher education
2. For reasons that are beyond our control, it is unfortunately not possible for female employees sponsored by the British Council to sponsor accompanying family members.
3. Male employees can only sponsor their accompanying family members if their salary is equal or greater than QAR10,000.
4. Holders of passports containing an Israeli stamp will not be granted visas to Qatar
5. Successful candidates will need to provide many documents, some of which must be attested. This is to gain residency in Qatar.
6. Medical tests are carried out in[1]country before a residence permit is granted – tests for major infectious diseases are carried out. The British Council has no control over this process.
7. It takes a minimum of 4 months for a person to be able to sponsor spouse and children to gain residency in Qatar. In general, family members will not be able to accompany the staff member to post from the onset of the contract.
8. Distance and online learning degrees are not currently recognised by the Qatari government. This prevents the British Council from securing a Residence Permit for concerned applicants.
Fulfilling the above requirements does not guarantee that we will be able to secure the appropriate visa or permit for you or your family members. Unfortunately, the British Council has no control over such governmental decisions.
Notes
Teaching staff are required to teach the agreed number of contact hours, plus a further three hour’s emergency cover by exception. This might involve teaching the agreed hours over fewer than 5 days.
Navy
Teaching hours at the naval base are 4-4.5 hours per day, 5 days per week (Sun-Thu). Classes start as early as 7am and finish by midday.
Teaching Centre (not applicable to this contract)
Should there be any teaching centre work available after the navy contract is completed, the bulk of teaching on the core programmes is carried out on Saturdays, and in the mornings and late afternoon to evening timeslots. The usual weekly shift pattern is Saturday to Wednesday although this can vary. All teachers are expected to deliver both Young Learner and Adult courses. shifts may occur from time to time, especially during the holy month of Ramadan and if working on corporate programmes.
Language requirements
High proficiency in English i.e. full mastery of English across all four skills equivalent to user (CEFR C2) IELTS Band 8/9 in each of 4 sections of the academic module

▪ More than 1,400 hours of recent and relevant post-certificate EFL teaching experience to Adults.
▪ Experience teaching on off-site
